The capacity of communities of color to eliminate the disproportionate burden of premature death and preventable illness through prevention, early detection, and control of disease complications is limited.

That’s why, in April 2001, the National Minority Health Month Foundation (now National Minority Quality Forum) launched National Minority Health Month by partnering with Congress and the White House.

This month of awareness was inspired by Booker T. Washington who started National Negro Health Week (NNHW) in 1915, which, from 1921 to 1953, was a program supported by the Public Health Service in response to Healthy People 2010, the US Department of Health and Human Services’ health-promotion and disease-prevention initiative.

The health profile of the United States has changed, as have responses to it. That is why National Minority Quality Forum continues to drive National Minority Health Month – a national, inclusive initiative that addresses the health needs of people of color.
